You've only got one

I don't believe in karma. I don't believe in fate either. Well sort of. I think they both inextricably overlap each other. I don't quite like the idea of a set fate. Makes you feel so helpless about your life, you know? But shit happens anyway. No matter how hard you try, you get screwed over every so often.

I prefer to use the word "destiny" over fate. I think some people get it mixed. "Destiny" and "Fate" are not quite the same. If you want proof:

fate
n.
1. The supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines events.
2. The inevitable events predestined by this force.

des·ti·ny
n. pl. des·ti·nies
1. The inevitable or necessary fate to which a particular person or thing is destined; one's lot.
2. A predetermined course of events considered as something beyond human power or control: “Marriage and hanging go by destiny” (Robert Burton).

The difference you ask? The difference to me is that your destiny is a destination that you chose. Fate is so... absolute, you know? Like everything was decided arbitrarily; as if you have no say in anything whatsoever. It's too concrete for me to swallow. But maybe the fact that you chose a certain option; the path you decided to take was meant to be. It was meant for you to have made a certain choice, it was meant for you to have done something, for something to have happened. They all influence you and what you choose. So it's not exactly karma, nor is it really fate. It's destiny.

Someone will be with you shortly
Say I'm wrong
You decide
I don't believe the words you sing sometimes
But then it's your life
Uh huh, it's your life
It's your life
Uh huh, it's your life
But, you've only got one... only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one only got one

You're right that they're different, although technically, if you read those definitions, destiny is derived from fate.

2. The inevitable events predestined by this force.
1. The inevitable or necessary fate to which a particular person or thing is destined; one's lot.

Destiny is the result of a driving force, which is fate, that "inevitable force". So you shouldn't say "one's fate" but "one's destiny, with fate being the driving force". Hmmm... I suppose that interpretation is actually quite debatable though, guess it's up to you to decide.

I believe in karma, but not fate. Although actually I don't really know what the real definition of karma is, just the common stereotype about things coming back to haunt you etc. If you do good things, good things will happen to you I guess. To me determinism seems to be the best way to go, because it shows that all things have causes, but it has a form of free choice associated with it. If you wanna read up some more on it, you can check it out here.

(oh god, i had to look up a tutorial just to link a page... i am w34k s4uc3...)
